Freaky (in theaters tonight) is a genre homage so explicitly faithful to its predecessors that it picks up on some of their flaws as well as their strengths. It doesn’t help that the film’s winning theatrical trailer essentially gives away both the movie (in terms of plot) and the pleasures (in terms of major set pieces and “kills”). Despite a terrific hook and game performances from its core cast, Freaky is a 1980’s slasher homage that creaks and sputters just like the genuine article, feeling like a tight 85-minute movie stretched out to 101 minutes both due to pacing issues and unnecessary prologues and epilogues. It’s surface-level amusing, but it doesn’t quite live up to its premise or pedigree.
